Airborne

We’re pleased to announce the launch of Memengo, Inc. Our mission is to put your data within your reach – no more hunting for yellow sticky notes scattered around or left at home, no more painful password reset procedures, no more anxiety about small but important piece of data that was just in your head but is now gone. You should be able to see your data whenever and wherever you are.

Memengo Wallet ™ is our first step towards fixing the problem:

  • You can enter your pieces of data online at www.memengo.com and we will save them for you. If you provide an encryption key (a pass-phrase of your choice) we will also encrypt the data before it leaves your machine and only those who know the pass-phrase will be able to see what’s inside.
  • Alternatively, you can install our mobile phone application and keep all the data pieces locally – the data will never leave your phone without your explicit action. Encryption is supported, so if your phone is lost the finders won’t be the keepers of your secrets.
  • You can put the mobile and the web applications in sync – that way all changes made in one will be visible in the other after next synchronization. And you won’t have to worry about losing your phone and all the secrets within.

So make sure to give it a try. If you’re like us you will feel liberated from the need to micro-manage your stuff. Peace of mind is what it’s all about.

    dloaded the app from itunes
    setup an online acct
put the online acct info into the phone app
hit synch on the phone and get a success message
create a new folder on the phone and synch, can’t see it on the web
create a new folder in the web app and synch, can’t see it on the phone

Obviously these things should work, any thoughts?

  2. Jim B Says:

    figured it out

The app created 2 wallets and synched them correctly. I got confused because they both had the same name.

If I was doing it again I’d create the online acct from the phone app rather than from the browser. I think that would keep the app from creating the second wallet.

  3. LeeO Says:

Memengo has worked smoothly on my IPhone so far, plus web sync and priint are essentials. I appreciate the heads up on the future plans. However, I have to say that I will be avoiding annual fees if you go that direction. Anyway, congratulations on a really nice app.

  4. ABUI Says:

Need a desktop application as an alternative to the web for backup. A lot of people still does not trust a new sight to handle password and secure items. I think you will sell more iphone app once you have the desktop version.

  5. Denis Says:

LeeO, thanks for letting us know your preference. One of the reasons we published that is to get opinion from folks like you.

Just in case, I would like to emphasize that there will be 3-month grace period if we go that route, and the fact that even without online sync Memengo Wallet can still be used as a phone-only password manager.

  6. Denis Says:

ABUI, we have gone with Web approach because mainly that’s how we use it ourselves – on many PCs (at work, home etc) where I wouldn’t want to sync the phone.
You are right in that adding a desktop version will probably make Memengo Wallet appeal to more people. We’ll look into it, but this will likely not change any time soon.

  7. ABUI Says:

As for your business. You shoud keep the web free. Get a bigger userbase (not sure how). Use the web traffic and add advertising. Check out google adsense.

  8. WRussell Says:

Haven’t tried your product yet, but I plan to. I can understand individuals not wanting to pay annual fees, but I guess you guys (and girls) need to eat also. I’m the IT Manager of a mid size company and password management is getting to be a bigger and bigger problem every day. Might want to consider how to attract commercial customers who are willing to pay fees thereby possibly keeping individual accounts free. Just a thought.

  9. Thomas Says:

Love the app. It needs the ability to change the font though. Sometimes for lists a small font makes the list easy to read. I am sure other people would like the font larger as well.

Do you have a sugestion box?

  10. Denis Says:

This is the closest thing we have to a suggestion box. :)

Although I don’t think it will be high on priority list, I made a note of your request.

    Thanks for stopping by.

  11. Roger Says:

I have been using it for just over a week and it has been working fine until today. I must have reached some upper limit on the size of a note since I cannot access the note any longer. Other (shorter) notes are still there, but when I access the long text note, the screen goes nuts (keeps displaying portions of a screen over and and over again). Any chance I can recover the text from my long note?

  12. Roger Says:

Update to last entry. I forgot to mention that I am using the iPhone version of memengo. I also just found that if I am patient and ignore the crazy screen data, I can press the Edit button and I do see the data in the editor. I hope that helps you figure out what is going on.

  13. Denis Says:

Hi Roger, thanks for reporting this. I have reproduced the problem on my iPhone and we’ll look into it. Also thanks for suggesting workaround (Edit button) – I will add it to FAQ until bug is fixed.

  14. John Says:

Hello…If I entered some data into a wallet before remembering to encrypt it, is there a way to ensure that all of the data is encrypted?

  15. John Says:

Addition to last, sorry. I meant that I synced before encrypting, then encrypted, then synced again. Your FAQ makes it sound like any data synced before encrypting will not be encrypted.

  16. Denis Says:

    John,
if you encrypt data after syncing and then sync again it will become encrypted and remain that way. Login online to make sure things are the way you want them to be.

We encourage everyone to encrypt as early as possible because this is a good practice in general.

  17. John Says:

Thanks, Denis! Could you ease one fear that could be common with network syncing? The nightmare would be waking up one day to find the Memengo website closed down, no answer at the phone numbers, and our data “out there” in etherspace. Obviously it would be uncomfortable given the nature of things stored in the wallets with all of the stories of identity theft, etc. I’ve read the “Why can I trust Memengo” paragraph…can you give any more assurance as to the security of our data?

  18. Denis Says:

John, if you encrypt your data we can’t really get to it without the key. That was the whole point of our design – even our servers get stolen encrypted data remains inaccessible. You could, of course, argue that there is no way for you to know if this is true, but then the same argumet applies to any other password manager out there – they also could send data to mothership without letting you know.

The only difference between us and them is that some of our competitors have a few years of history to stand on and we don’t. In due time we will have that too, and hey if you don’t feel comfortable yet make sure to come back in a year and check us out again.

  19. Joe Says:

I’m encountering the bug Roger found. I have an iPhone 3G and all my notes longer than a few lines display as scrambled gibberish.

The short and medium length notes work ok using Roger’s workaround, they will display correctly in the Edit screen.

However, the long notes (though still within Microsoft Outlook’s limit) do not display properly, even in the Edit screen. I have to get to a web browser to view those notes.

    Great app, otherwise.

  20. Joe Says:

I should add that the problem seems to be connected to either the “Note” field of a card, or else a “Free-form Note” card. Card fields like “Name” and “Email” seem to not show this bug.

  21. Denis Says:

    Joe and Roger.

I have isolated the bug and created somewhat of a fix, it will be in the next update.
Alas it seems that iPhone is unable to render solid block of text over 2000 pixels tall (leading to the UI fireworks you have observed), so the fix is to limit the text length that can be viewed in that place. You will have to press “edit” to view the rest of the text.

I have not seen the problems with long text within edit box yet. I have entered 3858 characters of text and “Edit” box seems to display things correctly.

  22. Joe Says:

Sounds great, Denis. Thanks for the prompt work and a very nice app.
